Dallas College North Lake Campus

Commissioned by Core Laboratories, Inc. to decorate the North Lake college campus, "Prometheus" is Medellín’s largest freestanding sculpture. In Greek mythology, the titan Prometheus defied the gods by stealing fire and giving it to humanity. The sculpture features two hands reaching skyward to capture an orange flame. The theme is appropriate given the work’s presence at an institution devoted to education, but it might also reflect some of the events in Medellín’s own life at the time. The artist retired from teaching in 1979—the same year the sculpture was completed—after five decades at numerous institutions across Texas. A modern-day titan, Medellín ignited his students’ passion for art and culture, and they, in turn, passed this flame to the next generation of artists.
